We Start & We (I) Miscalcuate

Almost immediately as soon as we started the site cut on 9th July, I realised there was an issue with my site cut & fill calculations. I’d originally calculated we’d end up with approximately 80sqm of excess cut material, however very early on we’d already ended up with this:

The result was this clay pile below and the lesson learn’t here is the software (Kubla Cubed) I used to plan and calculate the site cut/fill volumes, only calculates the raw in-situ volume and does not caclulate any bulking or compaction - you need to do that separately!

The result was this stockpile of clay which was approximately 600sqm, a little bit more than my 120sqm original estimate. Whoops! The stockpile of top-soil is expected and seperated out from the clay, I intend to use that for landscaping.

Notes on the Lack-of Batters & Straight Edges

You’ll see that the site cut is deep and lots of straight edges. This won’t be the end result, as we’ll be grading the site and adding 1:4 batters to the edges, it was just easier at this stage to do straight edges and cut the site fairly large to make construction a bit easier.

Once the bones of the house are up, I’ll backfill the site and start to shape the land.
